  • Limit your time with regret.

  • Give help to others.

  • Focus on the present instead of romanticizing the past.

  • Acknowledge regret, and move forward with confidence.

Limit your time spent on regret. We cannot go back in time and fix how we reacted, change the words we said, or choose a different path. The only thing we can do is learn from what worked and what didn’t. Living in the past hinders our ability to see how things can change and improve. It is all too easy to dwell on how things were before. It is easy to remember the good times. It can also be easy only to remember how bad things were. It is normal to hyper-focus on what you feel in the moment regarding the past. Feelings are temporary. It is important to remind yourself of all aspects of a situation and then take away what is helpful in your journey moving forward.

The same goes for a relationship. If you are working on a relationship with someone, the best way to move forward is to think about your future together. Instead of harping on what you did that was hurtful or destructive, talk with each other about what you are each looking for as you move forward. Reflect on the following questions:

What is it that you want to focus on now?

How do you want to live?

What is important to you?

How will you move on together as a couple?

Do your passions and ambitions still align with each other?

These questions will lead you in the direction of how to move forward.

Open and honest communication is the cornerstone of any relationship. By expressing your thoughts and needs, you create an environment of understanding and growth where both parties feel valued and heard. Communication is the most important part of any relationship you have. You cannot expect someone to know what you are thinking. We grow and change as people; therefore, our wants and needs also grow. That means the other person in the relationship has changed, too. Allow room for growth and understanding.

Acknowledging the mistakes you made in the past helps you understand how your choices have affected your life and those around you. This knowledge will help you better understand how to make better chances in the future.
